An exciting opportunity has become available for an enthusiastic individual to work within the Technical Lab Services (TLS) division at their Worthing site. In this apprenticeship role, Mitie will support you to achieve your level 3 qualification as a Laboratory Technician.
What it's like being a Level 3 Laboratory Technician

Your role as a laboratory technician apprentice, will be to provide support to the members of the Technical Lab Services (TLS) division. Within your apprenticeship you will divide your time performing duties and learning activities such as formal training and shadowing.

As part of your apprenticeship some of the duties you will be required to perform include:

• Laboratory inventory and stock management
• Receipt and management of chemicals, solvents, and consumables within storage areas in line with COSHH and EHS requirements
• Preparing samples for analysis
• Removal of laboratory waste
• Daily cleaning of specialist glassware
• Regular cleaning of laboratory equipment
• Equipment calibrations, PQ checks and functionality testing
• Functionality testing and regular user-maintenance of assorted laboratory equipment
• Perform ‘return to service’ on HPLCs
• Troubleshooting and maintenance of HPLCs
• Transport of samples to and from the laboratories, retained sample store and controlled storage
• Ensure that tasks are completed according to the schedule and therefore have no negative impact to the lab or production
• Use all work equipment and personal PPE properly and in accordance with training received
• Report any issues or training needs to your Line manager and /or via your divisional incident reporting system
• Working in line with rigorous GSK processes, procedures & Standards



• The ability to show an interest in science, or laboratory testing.


• Ideally English, Maths and Science GCSE A-C grade or equivalent (however lower grades will be considered, so don’t be put off)
• BTEC Science with grade MMM or higher or A Levels with CCC or higher (desirable)

Skills and characteristics

• Computer literate (Microsoft Office)
• Position requires individual to be mobile (moving to/ from various laboratories) and some physical lifting will be necessary
• Enthusiastic and hard working
• Attentive to detail with the capability to work methodically in line with strict processes and procedures Compliant with health and safety requirements
• Confident with communication skills to challenge behaviours and drive continuous improvement
• Perform under pressure and independent of supervision
• Customer focussed
• Works well as part of a team

Over 21 months, you’ll devote 20% of your 37.5 hours of working time towards a Level 3 Laboratory Technician apprenticeship. You’ll be trained by an expert tutor from Tiro as well as an experienced mentor at Mitie who together, will make sure you develop the knowledge, skills, and work habits you’ll need to succeed in your career. The best part? You’ll be earning while you learn.

Being an apprentice is hands-on, so you’ll get the chance to learn things you might otherwise not have experienced in a university or college environment.
